    Ideal framing (schematic)

    Head: crown (top of hair) to chin fills 50% to 69% of the photo height, ideally about 60%. The crown is estimated, so treat this figure as approximate.

    Eyes: eye line sits 56% to 69% from the bottom, ideally near 62.5%.

    Pose: face the lens straight on, head level, face centred.

    Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking at the camera.

    Background: plain white or off-white, with no objects, shadows, patterns or lines. Blue, grey or coloured backgrounds are not accepted.

    Photo age: taken within the last 6 months. Confirm this at travel.state.gov.
